Baker Hughes has been keeping track of the rig count since 1944.  This site provides statistics on U.S. and International rig counts as well as workover rigs.

BPAmoco
British Petroleum/Amoco provides an abundance of worldwide energy data on coal, natural gas, hydroelectric, petroleum, and nuclear AND they have graphed much of it for you. In case you want to graph it yourself, you can download Excel spreadsheets of various data.

Energy Information Agency
DOE's data base is focused more on the United States energy statistics.

International Energy Agency
Statistics provided by this Paris-based group are considered by most analysts to be the best available. A recent controversy suggested that inaccurate figures relating to supply and demand may have unnecessarily caused the 1998 drop in oil prices.
